my rod bearings looked brand new with about 12k DD miles when I took the engine apart. However the main #3 and the thrust bearing had uneven wear with copper showing and worn into the thrust face of the crank. I was running mostly conventional 20W50 race oil for every 1k miles. I suspect my bearing problem was caused by improper crank play and/or no AC belt. I always had metallic flakes in the oil change.
Since I rebuilt the engine and the break-in, I've been using synthetic 10w30 race oil for every 3k miles. I've had little to no metallic flakes in the oil change. The oil pressure has dropped about 5psi across. So I'm happy about it except for the stubborn lifter tick.
